This short course provides a broad conceptual understanding of this emerging field and
critically examines the historical and contemporary uses of different justice interventions
through selected case studies in the African continent.

The short course seeks to examine the major trends that have an impact on peace support operations (PSOs) in Africa, in general, and more specifically in the Greater Horn of Africa (GHOA). The course shall critically reflect on the changing nature of conflict in Africa and to examine how PSOs are being affected by this dynamics. Initially, peace-keeping missions were simply meant to observe a ceasefire agreement -- and many missions in other parts of the world still are. But today, and in practice, missions can have many different objectives, mandates, time frames and forms, and their legal basis, which for the AU has been defined in the PSC protocol. The course will focus on different types of PSOs and missions. The main goal is to enable participants to differentiate between the different mission types and discuss trends that are relevant for the Africa, with particular attention to the Greater Horn of Africa.
